Every time I hear, “Two are better than one…” I think donuts. Seriously, in what situation have you been where two donuts isn’t better than one?
Exactly! You can’t think of a single situation.
Then my world comes crashing down because I realize, this is a quote from the Bible, not my donut order. Ho hum…
I’m reading in Ecclesiastes chapter 4 and lo and behold:
“Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him–a threefold cord is not quickly broken.” Ecclesiastes 4:9-10, 12
The first thing you’ll notice is this passage is written to men. Why that is sexist you might thing…nope. It’s just that men suck at doing life together with other guys. Ladies have this figured out. They go to the bathroom in small groups. Guys won’t even make eye contact in a concession stand line. So we need more help in this area.
Here are some facts of life:
We will fall down and we will get knocked down. It is a lot easier to get back up if someone is there to encourage you to get back up and to offer you a hand.
People will try to break us. On our own it can happen. When we hide our sin from the world and don’t confess our challenges to our closest friends, the pressure builds up. If we don’t share the burden, we’ll break.
Men – who are you walking with? Who are you sharing life with? Who are you willing to share your challenges with? Who will you allow to help you up? Who will you allow to share your burdens?
If you have to think very hard, your answer is actually no one. So what will you do about it? How can you find someone? What’s the first step?
