Quiet Time

This post is brought to you by, Quiet Time. You know the time of the day that your kid(s) have to be in their room doing something quiet so that you can get off your feet or actually accomplish something in normal time? Quiet time is the new normal in our home. At 2 PM, no matter what is going on, we pause for quiet time. Quiet time is awesome. It’s only an hour, but we are thankful for it.

We hope it gives rise to some more obedient evenings. We’ve been struggling lately with the 4 almost 5 year old tantrums, blatant disobedience. It hasn’t been fun or pretty. But we are hanging in.

Those of you farther down the path than us with kids, you could help a brother out and tell me the secret to all this. We really all don’t have to learn this on our own do we?

Maybe we do. Crap…

A Little Bit Country

I grew up around rodeo. It really is an amazing life to grow up in. Not everyone gets that experience. And really, Isaac hadn’t, until now. This is footage from the Bullriders of America 2011 year end finals in Ottumwa last weekend. Thanks to aunt Shauna for the hat and Grandma for the shirt.

When I say Christmas, what is the first thing that comes to mind?

That’s my boy. What should the caption of this photo be? (FYI – 6 other pictures, none with his eyes open, nice.)

Victory Ranch – the results

Parents, you know how you tend to project your dreams and excitements onto your children? Come one, admit it you do it, or have done it in the past. You want your kids to be excited about what you were excited about when you were younger. I have not had that come to fruition for me yet. Meaning, things I did as a young pup haven’t really been on Isaac’s radar thus far. But Saturday changed everything.

We went to Victory Ranch south of town on Saturday for a fun day. Isaac rode his first horse (I grew up on horse back) and shot his first BB gun. Ahhh, this is the life.

Now You Have a Lunch Date

Regardless of what you had planned for lunch today, dedicate 7 minutes to this. Below is a video of Aaron Shust talking about the place from which his newest album came.

It isn’t your normal artist schtick. It is heart wrenching. And amazing. Invest 7 minutes in this. It will make your day.

This faith is real and vibrant and alive. And not out of a some cushy life, but out of deep pain and struggle. Faith on the far side of complexity is much more pure and that is evident, in listening to Aaron Shust’s music or speaking with him.

Thanks you for everything Mr. Shust.

At my parents house. Isaac trying out some old tools of the trade. What do you think?

Will he make a cowboy one of these days?

Is This Heaven?

Isaac had to be asking this question on Monday. We went to Carroll’s Pumpkin Farm for some fun and relaxation. Pretty sure this was a good spot for our little man. They had goats, corn, pumpkins, tricycles and munchkin sized wheelbarrows.

The “Is this Heaven?” joke or comment or whatever from the movie the Field of Dreams isn’t too far from the truth. Let me explain.

Many of us, based on how we act here, must think this – the here and now – is Heaven. Or put another way, this is as good as it gets and because of that we better squeeze every ounce of pleasure out of each moment.

But this isn’t it. We weren’t made for this world. Our home is in eternal relationship with God. This broken world isn’t Heaven. It’s a broken place and God wants every person to be redeemed from it.

Is this Heaven? Some days we get glimpses of what Heaven must be like. Isaac playing so hard and laughing so much he can barely catch his breath. A permanent smile on Jen’s face. Peace.

Some times we get a glimpse, but this isn’t it. So don’t get too comfortable. We get to spend eternity somewhere, it just isn’t here.

Computer Genius

Isaac is a computer genius. I’m not sure he knows it yet, but it is obvious. Check out the following typing.

•†ÎÏBVCUUCF©ÏÎÁÎ∑ÎÁ´∑Î∑´†´´†∑•ŒARYH ZYBBΩ≤

He has some crosses, some Greek letters, some accent marks and a copyright sign. I have wanted to do a copyright sign before and can’t figure out how to do it. I’ve also wanted to do a degree mark, you know the circle up and to the right, but I can’t figure that either.

And my 4 year old just starts hacking away on the keyboard and this is the result. I’m impressed.
